The bumper swell latch must be adjusted for proper tension when it is first installed. 

The latch must be very loose when in the "open" position, and slightly loose when in the "closed" position. Otherwise, the latch will close too tightly. When the latch is too tight, closing the latch will put high pressure on the latch parts, and this will cause them to break.

A little trial-and-error when first installing the latch is needed, in order to set the tension correctly. The tension is set by screwing or unscrewing the bottom nut of the latch. Test the latch with various degrees of tightness on the bottom nut. The latch is set properly when it can be closed easily, without having to exert significant pressure.
