How often should I replace propane hoses?Updated 7 months ago

Propane hoses should be replaced when they become very stiff, show signs of cracking (rubber hoses in particular), or begin to leak. A soapy water test at the fittings every camping season is a very good idea.

The propane industry recommendation is to "consider" replacement at 5 years. Propane hoses will have a shorter life if they are:

  • in the sun (rather than under a propane cover)
  • exposed to extreme moisture
  • exposed to extreme heat (desert southwest)

Stainless braided hoses are more resistant to abrasion, UV, animals, and nicking, and so they are a good choice when durability is important. We cannot say definitely that they will always last longer overall. The reason is that the interior part of the hose (the part that actually contains the gas) will naturally deteriorate in any hose over time. This is why regular testing for leaks, with a soapy water solution, is a good idea.
